Grey
Grey cast iron
Grey cast iron, also known as GJL, has a microstructure with graphite in the form of lamellae. This makes the material highly machinable.
Ideal damping of vibrations and noise
Grey cast iron offers excellent damping of vibrations and noise, and has good thermal conductivity. It also has good wearing resistance, and is very pressure-resistant. For these reasons, the material is often used for engine blocks, pipelines and machine frames.

Ductile
Ductile cast iron
Ductile cast iron, also known as Nodular or GJS, has a microstructure with spherical graphite nodules.
The matrix can be ferritic, perlitic or a combination of both, depending on the type. These variations provide a balance between strength, toughness and wearing resistance.
Ideal for dynamic loading
Ductile cast iron has high electrical and thermal conductivity and is magnetically permeable. This cast iron is ideal for parts subjected to dynamic loads and is often used in heavy mechanical applications such as pump housings, crankshafts, suspensions and gears.
